A 3D paper star with just one cut
This 3D origami star is made from one square of paper with a few folds and a single cut. When you open it, you have a perfect five-pointed star, and a few mountain and valley folds make it pop up in 3D.
It is one of the easiest and most beautiful Christmas origami crafts: gold or yellow paper makes a shining Christmas tree topper, and starry or glitter paper looks like a little piece of the night sky.
Kids can make it with the help of their parents. You can teach your child together: watch the video, follow the step-by-step pictures and fold side by side.
Ideas for your paper stars
- Christmas tree topper: fold a big star from 20 × 20 cm gold paper and fix it on top of the tree.
- Tree ornaments: make small stars and hang them with a thread.
- Window stars: stick a row of stars on the window, like in Scandinavian homes in December.
- Gift toppers: glue a star on a wrapped present instead of a bow.
- Star garland: thread many stars on a string. More ideas on the Christmas crafts page.
Questions
How do you make a 3D paper star?
Fold a square in half, fold it into a thin point with a few angled folds, cut once on a slant and open it. Then make mountain folds to the points and valley folds between them, and the star pops up.
What paper is best for a 3D star?
A 15 × 15 cm square of origami paper. Gold, yellow, silver or patterned paper looks the most festive.
Why does my star have only four or six points?
The first fold decides the number of points. Fold the corner exactly to the cross, starting from the middle mark, and the star will have five even points.
Can kids make it?
Yes, with a grown-up's help for the cut. The folds are easy, and opening the star is the best surprise.
