A little paper stocking for the Christmas tree
This origami Christmas stocking (some people call it Christmas socks) is folded from one square of paper, with a white cuff made from the back of the paper. A clever slanted fold turns the foot to the side, and two small tucks round the toe. No glue is needed.
Green and red paper with a white back look the most festive. Draw snowflakes, stars or a name on it with a white pen.
Kids can make it with the help of their parents. You can teach your child together: watch the video, follow the step-by-step pictures and fold side by side.
Ideas for your paper stockings
- Christmas tree ornaments: punch a small hole in the cuff and hang the stockings with a red thread.
- Gift card holder: slide a gift card, money or a secret note into the stocking.
- Advent calendar: fold 24 stockings, number them, and hang them on a string with a little surprise in each.
- Gift tags and place cards: write a name on the cuff and tie it to a present or put it on a plate.
- Make a set: add an origami Santa and a paper star. More ideas on the Christmas crafts page.
Questions
What paper is best for an origami Christmas stocking?
A square of about 15 × 15 cm that is coloured on one side and white on the other, so the cuff turns out white.
Do I need glue or scissors?
No. The stocking is folded from one square, with no cutting and no glue.
Can it hold a gift card?
Yes, a small gift card or a folded note fits inside the leg of the stocking. Use bigger paper for bigger gifts.
How do I hang it on the tree?
Make a small hole in the cuff with a needle or hole punch and tie a ribbon or thread through it.
